Understanding Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is the fastest-spreading vector-borne disease globally, affecting over 100 countries and posing serious health risks, especially for those with weakened immune systems. The dengue virus has four serotypes, making repeated infections possible, although each infection grants immunity to the specific serotype encountered.

Current Dengue Situation in the Philippines

According to the Department of Health (DOH), there has been a significant increase in dengue cases in the Philippines. From August 4 to 17, 36,335 cases were reported, marking a 25% rise from the previous period. Overall, from January to September 6, 2024, there have been 208,965 cases—a staggering 68% increase compared to last year.

How to Protect Yourself from Dengue

Personal Protection Measures:

  • Wear long-sleeved clothing and pants to minimize skin exposure.

  • Use mosquito repellents and sleep under mosquito nets, preferably treated with insect repellent.

  • Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity times and use citronella-based products.

Environmental Measures:

  • Dispose of waste properly and eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.

  • Regularly maintain and clean water storage containers.

  • Apply odorless insecticides to outdoor water storage areas to kill mosquito larvae.

Health Precautions:

  • If you experience symptoms, get tested for dengue without delay and consult your doctor.

  • Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to support recovery if infected again.

Start implementing these dengue prevention strategies today. If you or your loved ones show symptoms of dengue fever, seek medical advice promptly. By taking proactive measures, you can help reduce the impact of this disease.
